CBS Sunday Morning story on the history of lighting starts at Edison’s 1879 invention ‘light in a bottle’ and goes up to the new LED’s bulbs that will be the future of lighting. These new LED’s use about 9 watts of electricity versus the standard filament bulb that use 60 watts. The second advantage with these new bulbs is that they would last 10 to 20 years without ever having to change them. With somewhere around 4.7 billion sockets in the U.S. this would save a huge amount on electricity consumption by the nation.
Ultimately this work will better our lives in the form of better nourishment, health & lifestyle. So if this brings to mind someone you know, this is a priceless way to create awareness for their cause and also to say thanks.

Here’s the nomination form and more info on the program. It’s a simple process but entries must be in by May 2nd. You can even nominate yourself! Winners will be announced on June 4th at an event at the Beardsley Zoo.

Let Snappy know who you are nominating.

Last week, Walmart announced a five-year plan to make healthier foods more affordable. The grocery giant will do this by reducing the levels of salt, fats, and sugars in its packaged foods and by dropping prices on fruit and vegetables. The move was endorsed by First Lady Michelle Obama as part of the Lets Move campaign to raise a healthier generation of kids.

Harvard Business Review writes that Walmart is setting the example for a new three ‘R’ approach, that will influence the way business is done on a big scale. The three ‘R’s are Respect, Responsibility and Restraint.

Respect - Walmart’s announcement shows a deeper sense of respect for its customers.

Responsibility - As the nation’s largest retailer, Walmart seems to get that with great power comes great responsibility. and

Restraint: Price reductions are predicted to save American Walmart shoppers approximately $1 billion a year on fresh fruits and vegetables alone and the money is coming from Walmart’s margins, not its farmer suppliers. Read the full article

I am inspired that Walmart is taking this leap and I look forward to see what else happens in the industry. How about you?

Obama signs bill for better food safety while protecting local farmers with Tester/Hagen. [...]

by Wendy Brandt Martinenas

The Food Safety Modernization Act signed into law Tuesday by President Obama includes provisions that protect small farmers & food processors. The Center for Food Safety (CFS) applauded the bill passage, which gives the FDA a greater ability to safeguard our nation’s food system, including the authority to order mandatory food recalls and to put food safety plans in place.

The bill also includes provisions introduced by Senators Tester and Hagan that protect small and local food producers and processors that sell directly to consumers. This exempts them from FDA regulation due to their direct relationship with their customers because this ensures quality, safety, transparency and accountability. For these small farmers and processors, the costs of complying with all the new federal requirements would be burdensome and add little to food safety. Rest assured, they still must meet all state and local food safety requirements. Read the full article.
