Radon Facts: What Is It?

by Wendy Brandt Martinenas

We all know that Radon is bad when it exists in high levels in our home but what exactly is it?  Radon is a natural gas that comes from the ground. It forms when uranium and thorium decay in granite bedrock.

We cannot see it or smell it like gas so the only way to detect it is with a specific test.  Radon is measured in units of radioactivity as ‘picoCuries per liter’ (pCi/L).  If the test comes back at 4.0 pCi/L or higher, the EPA says it should be remediated.

Radon can be present not only in the air but also in your water and even granite counter tops. It is unfortunately linked to lung cancer so it’s important to know the current levels in your home.   If you are reading this and are concerned about Radon in your home, feel free to write to me for more information and help.
