Look for a unit with a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) between 16-21. For existing systems change the filter each month and schedule an annual checkup. These steps will ensure that your system runs at peak efficiency.
Stay cool while you sleep with an overhead fan instead of pumping air conditioning throughout the entire house. If you don’t care for this option try shutting the doors and vents of unused rooms. This will lighten the load of your air conditioning unit.
If you want to make an investment in the future consider going geothermal. This system pumps water and antifreeze or a refrigerant through pipes under the ground. The temperature of the earth then heats or cools the water which then heats or cools the air in your home when pumped through piping in your house.
Whatever your budget there are things you can do to decrease your costs.
