Air Conditioning Tips To Reduce Energy Consumption

by Wendy Brandt Martinenas

If you need a new air conditioner, why not get an energy efficient model. Not only is it better for our Earth, you’ll pay less each month to run it.  Look for a unit with a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) between 16-21.  To see if you can save money on your outright purchase use the tools on the left hand column of this website, the‘Rebate Finder by Energy Star & Tax Credit Product Finder .

For existing systems change the filter each month and schedule an annual checkup. These steps will ensure that your system runs at peak efficiency.

Stay cool while you sleep with an overhead fan instead of pumping air conditioning throughout the entire house.  If you don’t care for this option try shutting the doors and vents of unused rooms.  This will lighten the load of your air conditioning unit.

If you want to make an investment in the future consider going geothermal. This system pumps water and antifreeze or a refrigerant through pipes under the ground.  The temperature of the earth then heats or cools the water which then heats or cools the air in your home when pumped through piping in your house.

Whatever your budget there are things you can do to decrease your costs.
